Springtime for Sander 2006

    Goals:
  • To catch a 6 kg+ Zander...
  • To have fun

The perch2006-04-09 Horn Lake - ice fishing

Too thick ice, too much snow, too much work. No Zander activity, but some suspected perch bites. Changed to nylon traces and smaller hooks.

Proved the Perch theory by quickly catching a perch at 1.32 kg. Fun, but not all that exciting on Zander gear. Remembered why I detest winter, and long for spring!

Drilling holes in thick ice is good exercise - but no good entertainment.

2006-04-29 Pirate Bay - 10 degrees - 13m/s+ easterly winds

Far too windy for enjoyment. The method for the day was trolling livebaits. Two of them on floats, and the third - a tiny roach primarily aimed at perch - bottom-bouncing. We missed a good fish almost straight away (the molested 200g roach looked like a roach no more, after the attack). After that nothing much happened for quite a while. Around mid-day the wind calmed down slightly. Finally we could fish with a bit more precision. I had a gentle bite on the bottom-bouncer, but missed it. Marked the spot on the GPS-unit, and turned back again. The rod bent over, and I was attached to a heavy fish (especially heavy considering that I was using a Fox kevlar specialist rod). The fish gave up after a fairly prolonged fight; I was shaking like a leaf in the end. The Zander
Not quite 6kg - but a nice fish none-the-less

The absurdly spawn-bound zanderAfter returning the fish we turned around and visited the hotspot once more. This time something took a liking to one of larger roaches, and the float sank out of view. Tomas bent into what was obviously a Zander, and a good one to boot! It hugged the bottom, and was very reluctant to be coerced to the boat. Constant pressure made it come slowly closer in, but just as we thought we had it the wind increased again. We could see the Zander close to the surface, but the boat drifted at a good pace - making the fish extra heavy. It was absurdly spawn-bound, high-backed and broad (which is a good combination!). Finally it was safe in the net. The digital scales confirmed our hopes, it was a new personal best for Tomas. Quite a respectable one as well at 6.45 kg (luckily, for me, it was a good 50 grams below MY PB!). I managed to catch a small ~3 kg Zander and a 0.8 kg perch before the wind picked up even more and we had to head ashore.

Sadly the second battery (which was reserved for the trip home) turned out to be flat. We had to row back - a trip of some 1.5 very exhausting hours!
